The COST IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design (SID)
In this page:
SID - Sonic Interaction Design
SID stands for Sonic Interaction Design and it is a COST-ICT Action. The proposal was approved by COST Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) on November 20th, 2006. It entered into force on March 28th, 2007, and it will end on June 1st, 2011. The SID Action had its kickoff meeting in Brussels on April 24th, 2007.
Sonic Interaction Design is the exploitation of sound as one of the principal channels conveying information, meaning, and aesthetic/emotional qualities in interactive contexts. The Action pro– actively contributes to the creation and consolidation of new design theories, tools, and practices in this innovative and interdisciplinary domain. While being advanced through a few sparse projects, this field relies on the COST – SID Action to strengthen the links between scientists, artists, and designers in the European Research Area. The COST – SID platform stands on four legs: (i) perception, cognition, and emotion; (ii) design; (iii) interactive art; (iv) information display and exploration. These are each supported by the research and development of the requisite new interactive technologies. Due to the breadth of its application spectrum, the COST – SID Action has the potential of affecting everyday life through physical and virtual interactive objects, as today there is the possibility to design and actively control their acoustic response so that it conveys an intended aesthetic, informational, or emotional content.
Keywords: Interaction Design, Auditory Display and Sonification, Sound and Music Computing, Sound Modelling, Sound Perception and Cognition.
You can download the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which includes the Technical Annex.
These countries have signed the MoU and have nominated the delegates for the Management Committee (MC).
The MC have nominated the chair, vice-chair, and secretary.
Working Groups
The SID Action is structured into four Working Groups:
Working Group 1
- WG1: Perceptual, cognitive, and emotional study of sonic interactions
Working Group 2
- WG2: Product sound design
Working Group 3
- WG3: Interactive art and music
Working Group 4
- WG4: Sonification

Short-Term Scientific Missions:
Objectives
Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) are aimed at strengthening the existing networks by allowing scientists to go to an institution or laboratory in another COST member state to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. They are particularly (yet not exclusively) intended for young scientists (especially PhD students). STSMs may also be used to reimburse students attending a training school organized by the Action.

Training Schools
2009
The 2009 Sound and Music Computing Summer School is organized as a Training School of the SID COST Action and is held in the Casa da Música in Porto between 18-21 July 2009. This Summer School explores the potential of interacting with environmental sounds of the city of Porto.
