Bregman, Albert S. Auditory Scene Analysis : The Perceptual Organization of Sound, The MIT Press, Reprint 1995
The book is known as a standard reference for a view onto auditory perception. Based on the approach to auditory perception known from the Gestalt psychology Bregman describes the perception of complex sound scenarios as we know them from our daily life. The book addresses many basic problems e.g. separating two sound sources lying in similar frequency spectra or the 'cocktail party effect' where a listener can listen to a specific speaker even if the speaker is surrounded by a lot of noise and disturbing other sound sources. Models and techniques found in this book build a base for the programming of audio recognition systems and can thus play an important role in the development of interactive audio systems.
