Sonic Interaction Design (SID) is the discipline that investigates the use of sound in interactive experiences. As technologies become more miniaturized and embedded, and their users more mobile, interactive sound becomes increasingly important. The experiences offered by sonic interactions need to be effectively and beautifully designed.
Sketching is a fundamental part of the design process. Designers sketch ideas for objects, spaces, interactions, experiences. Bill Buxton's recent book, “Sketching User Experiences”, has laid out a palette of methods for sketching interactive experiences, that involve different forms of “visual storytelling”.
But how do we sketch when designing sonic interactions? This is the question at the core of this workshop. What is the equivalent for paper and pen when we come to design interactions that use sound as a main output?
A central topic in this workshop will be the use of the voice – vocal sketching – as one means of sketching sonic interactions. Can the voice for sound designers play a similar role as that played by the hand for the graphic designer? how can, and how do, people use their voice in the initial stages of designing sonic interactions?

You should have received invitation letters to present - if requested - upon your arrival.
From the airport to the hotel
Tel Aviv can be reached by train or taxi. There is a train station inside the airport.
It takes about 15 minutes to get to "Ha'Shalom" station in the center of Tel Aviv. The cost of the train is 13.5 Shekels.
From "Ha'Shalom" station it's best to take a taxi to the hotel; the price should be between 20-40 Shekels. You can find taxis outside as you exit the station.
Another good option is to take a taxi straight from the airport to the hotel, the price should be between 100-120 Shekels (~20 Euro). You will find taxis on your left when you exit the terminal. There is good signage and everyone speaks English.
From the hotel to HIT
The best way to reach Holon is by taxi (especially if you share one with other SIDers!). You can ask your hotel to order one, or flag one on the street. Ask the driver to go to Golomb 52 in Holon. The price should be around 40 shekel and the time around 20 minutes (a bit more of both if there's traffic, plan for 30 minutes, get an impression of the route on the Google maps).
Here's a map of the surrounding streets. Note: buses to HIT are slow and the route not worthwhile to master for the 2-day visitor!
Inside HIT, the meeting will take place in the Building 3 Conference Hall. It's a small campus and there will be signage pointing you there.
