Tuuri, K., Mustonen, M-S, Pirhonen, A. (2007) Same Sound - Different Meanings: A Novel Scheme for Modes of Listening, In: Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Interaction with Sound, p. 13-18, Ilmenau, Germany

This paper focuses listening modes (strategies of listening) specifically in interactive systems. The authors identify eight modes (reflexive, connotative, causal, empathetic, functional, semantic, critical, reduced) as the most relevant ones. Depending on the mode the meaning, interpreted by the listener, can be different or even contradictory. This observation observations can be of great importance four the field of sonic interaction. Sound design case studies are presented. In addition strategies of sound design, based on the conclusions drawn from the modes are discussed. As the paper addresses perception of sound in the context of user interface as well, it is seen as to be interesting for the WG 1.
