== WG1 MEETING: APRIL 4, 2008 – FLORENCE == Homepage of WG1: http://www.cost-sid.org/wiki/WG1Percept [[BR]] === PARTICIPANTS === Roberto Bresin (RB), Rolf Inge Godøy (RIG), Fabien Gouyon (FG), Dik J. Hermes (DJH), Patrik Susini (PS) At the beginning of the meeting Goals and Objectives of WG1 were reminded to the participants. [[BR]] === NEXT WG1 MEETING === It was first discussed were to have the next WG1 meeting. Three proposal were made: * HAID 08 conference, Haptic and Audio Interaction Design, http://www.haid2008.org/, 15-16/09, Jyväskylä, Finland * APCAM Auditory Perception, Cognition, and Action Meeting, http://apcam.us/, November 13, Chicago * Ison Interactive Sonification 2009, January, Stockholm After the SID MC Meeting on the next day (April 5th), it was decided that the next WG1 meeting will be during HAID 08 in Jyväskylä, in the period 15-17/09-2008. [[BR]] === BIBLIOGRAPHY === RB reported that a total of 47 papers have been identified so far. Papers have been divided in 10 categories. Only 15 papers have been annotated. All of the selected papers should be annotated. It was discussed that each category in which papers have been classified will be described. PS will provide a publication in French with a description of categories to be used for describe the categories identified so far by the WG1 members. FG proposes to introduce a new category: Machine sound identification. Question for the MC meeting were formulated: * Should the bibliography be put it in http://www.SMCnetwork.org? * Should we use annotations/taxonomy of S2S2? * What about the bibliography of the other WGs? Should we have the same format? Should we merge together all the bibliographies? [[BR]] === STATE-OF-THE-ART STUDY === WG1 members discussed about the study on the state-of-the-art. The focus of the publication has been identified: * Collection of studies on everyday sounds and identify the parameters (for designing synthetic sounds) The study should be similar to that by Juslin and Laukka on similarities between expression in speech and music (P. N. Juslin and P. Laukka, “Communication of emotions in vocal expression and music performance: Different channels, same code?” Psychological Bulletin, vol. 129, no. 5, pp. 770–814, 2003) It was discussed which should be the common characteristics between everyday and synthetic sounds which we should look for: The event? The motor activity? Naturalness? DJH proposed to look at studies which closed the loop such as that by Li, Logan & Pastore, 1991. It was finally identified that we collect papers on everyday sounds and identify the cues used in these publications. These cues should used in the design and guidelines of synthetic sounds. In a second stage we should collect papers on synthetic sounds and identify the cues used in these publications. It was proposed that for the identification of the cues used in everyday sounds, we should use the taxonomy proposed by Gaver and/or the sound class (e.g. impact sounds, friction sounds, …) RIG proposed that the state-of-the-art study should focus on the identification of criteria for GOOD SONIC DESIGN. This should be achieved by looking at studies on: * Quality of sound * Pleasure and displeasure * Sound preference Who is working on this study. At the moment confirmed their interest Bresin, Godøy, Gouyon, Hermes, and Lemaitre, [[BR]] === CHALLENGES === RB reported that a collection of challenges has been started. All delegates should provide a list of challenges. === DELEGATES’ RESEARCH INTERESTS === RB reported that a collection of current Research interests by WG1 members has been done. Next steps are: * Organize Research interests per topic * Relate Research interests to Challenges [[BR]] === METHODS === Collection of methods has been started. The focus is on: * providing examples of sonic interaction For the methodology in sonic interaction, participants identified the following topics: * State-of-the-art * Limits * Recorded sounds * Synthetic sounds * Everyday sounds * Quality of sounds * Example: walking sounds (Li, Logan & Pastore, 1991) ACTION TO BE TAKEN: Design of common experiment for comparing different methods (publication of paper) [[BR]] === GUIDELINES === It has been proposed by WG1 members that guidelines for the design of sonic interaction should be divided in two classes: * DESIGNER: interested in the mapping between auditory cues and physical parameters * EXPERIMENTER: interested on how to design psychophysical experiments for evaluating the design/product
