T1: Discussion with invited professional Sami Ronkainen (Nokia) [15']
Introduction of Sami Ronkainen from NOKIA: He spoke about his history with Nokia including first working on the sound design for ring-tones in the 6190. He is currently in the Maemo software group and has designed all the sounds for the Nokia series of Internet Tablets. His role has changed slightly as he is now moving towards a design role rather than a creation role. He spoke briefly about how Nokia was considering usability, combinations of sounds, and on expanding existing sound use such as improving keypad tones to be more informative than just a single tone. Sonification on the mobile phone was also discussed as the mobile is now part of a larger cloud of always connected computing with push notifications and location awareness. Information such as geo-tagged areas with large numbers of pictures from friends within a social network could be sonified (sonic trails). Hearing about your friends from around the world using sonification is another possibility.
The N Series and the branding aspects of Nokia was mentioned. This was super-ceded by James Bull talk at the MC who discussed this area in greater depth. Nokia was noted as turning more attention to the design of mechanical components which was something which was formerly overlooked or given a low priority.
Thomas raised a question about AppStore? equivalents and Sami introduced how Beta and Alpha labs work within Nokia as channels for software distribution. MOSH was also mentioned as another means of distribution. (applications as widgets). This was related to the idea of using these channels for the distribution of example sonification applications to a wide audience.
List of summarized aspects/questions where sound plays a role:
- where to use sound in the UI (mobile devices)
- ring tones, interaction tones
- sound and haptics
- trade-off disturbing-function
- how input is interpretated
- future: phone representing info from rest of the world
- broadband connection, always-connected
- location awareness (popular places)
- hearing the world around you
- navigation
- function vs aesthetics/emotion/branding
- minimal sonifications
We talked about a competition on sonification on mobile phones. Rod suggests to focus on encouraging people to submit examples. ICAD could be a possible event to establish such a competition. As part of the examples role, a SID YouTube? channel was suggested and could contain video such as the Schoogle App. Applications on NOKIA phones could be put on betalabs. Sami mentions the sportstracker system.
